Television

DVB-C

Digital Video Broadcasting — Cable. Standard for distributing digital TV over cable networks (CATV/MATV). Used in hotel internal distribution systems fed from a local headend.

Television

DVB-S2

Digital Video Broadcasting — Satellite 2nd generation. Standard for receiving satellite signal. Used in SMATV systems as the source signal for hotels outside cable network coverage areas.

Television

DVB-T2/HEVC

Second standard of terrestrial digital TV (DVB-T2) with HEVC (H.265) compression. Mandatory in Central Europe — TVs manufactured before 2018 without DVB-T2/HEVC decoder cannot receive terrestrial signal.

Hardware

Encoder / Transmodulator

An encoder converts a video signal (HDMI, SDI, composite) into an IPTV or DVB-C stream. A transmodulator converts a DVB-S2 (satellite) signal into DVB-C (cable). Both are key components of every headend.

Television

EPG

Electronic Programme Guide — on-screen TV programme guide. In IPTV systems, hotels can configure their own EPG with channel logos, programme descriptions and catch-up. Without a correct EPG, guests only see channel numbers.

Network

Firewall

Device or software controlling traffic between the hotel network and the Internet. Blocks unauthorised access, filters dangerous content and protects guest data. The first line of defence for any hotel network.

Infrastructure

GPON

Gigabit Passive Optical Network — passive fibre FTTH network where a single fibre delivers TV, Internet and phone to each room. No active elements in risers, zero signal attenuation over 20 km.

Software

GRMS

Guest Room Management System — integrates lighting, air conditioning, blinds, TV and presence sensors in one panel or app. Automatically reduces temperature and turns off lights after guests leave, reducing energy costs. Often integrated with PMS and IPTV.

Television

HbbTV

Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV — standard combining traditional terrestrial TV with Internet content. Enables catch-up TV, apps and digital services directly from the remote — without Smart TV hardware.

Hardware

Headend

Central device receiving TV signals (satellite, terrestrial, cable, IPTV) and processing them for distribution across the hotel network. Modern headends are compact and fully IP-based.

Network Protocol

IGMP

Internet Group Management Protocol — manages multicast transmission on IP networks. In hotel IPTV, IGMP Snooping ensures streams are only sent to rooms watching a given channel — not flooded across the entire network. Without correct IGMP configuration, hotel IPTV does not work.

Infrastructure

MATV / SMATV

Master Antenna Television (MATV) — shared antenna system for the entire property. SMATV (Satellite MATV) adds a satellite dish. The signal from the headend is amplified and distributed to every room via coaxial network.

Network Protocol

Multicast

"One-to-many" transmission — a single source (e.g. headend) sends a stream and the network copies it only to requesting recipients. Foundation of hotel IPTV: 200 rooms watch the same channel but the stream leaves the headend only once.

Streaming

OTT

Over The Top — video delivery over the public Internet, bypassing traditional cable networks (Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+). In hotels requires properly sized bandwidth and QoS management.

Software

PMS

Property Management System — hotel management software (e.g. Opera, Protel, Sihot). PMS integration with TVs enables automatic check-in on screen, personalised welcome messages and billing services to room.

Infrastructure

PoE

Power over Ethernet — standard for powering network devices (WiFi access points, IP cameras, VoIP phones) via UTP cable. Eliminates the need for separate power supplies at each access point in the hotel.

Network

QoS

Quality of Service — mechanism for prioritising network traffic. In hotels, QoS ensures that video streaming and VoIP take priority over file downloads, eliminating buffering while guests watch TV.

Network

Router

Device connecting the hotel's local network (LAN) to the Internet (WAN). Hotel routers typically handle: VLAN, QoS, firewall, VPN for staff and Captive Portal for guest access control.

Wireless

SSID

Service Set Identifier — the WiFi network name visible to users. Hotels use multiple SSIDs: separate networks for guests, staff and management devices, each with different permissions and VLAN assignments.

Network

Switch

Device connecting devices on the local network (LAN) — servers, access points, TVs, IP cameras, VoIP phones. A managed switch enables VLAN and QoS priority configuration. Hotels typically have one main switch and one per floor.

Network

VLAN

Virtual Local Area Network — logical separation of network traffic on the hotel's physical network. Separates guest network (Internet) from TV management and device networks, improving security and performance.

Streaming

VOD / SVOD

Video On Demand (VOD) — any video content available on demand. SVOD (Subscription VOD) is the subscription model (Netflix, Disney+). Hotels implement internal VOD systems for guests without Smart TV requirement.

Communication

VoIP

Voice over IP — telephony over IP network. Replaces analogue telephone exchanges (PBX) with digital SIP systems. Hotel room phones are increasingly VoIP devices integrated with PMS.

Wireless

WiFi 6 / WiFi 6E

IEEE 802.11ax standard (WiFi 6) and its 6 GHz band extension (WiFi 6E). Handles many devices simultaneously (OFDMA) — essential in hotels where each guest brings multiple devices. Throughput up to 9.6 Gb/s.
